A lovely 19th century Italian Grand Tour specimen marble rule, formed of 22 bands of marble and hard stones joined in octagonal form, c1860. The Grand Tour refers to the journey through France and Italy made in the 18th and 19th century by the educated young male members of the upper class in order to acquire new political, geographical, financial and linguistic knowledge. These specimen marble objects, usually desk and witting sets or tables, were destined for the libraries of well-travelled young men on their return back to their countries.
With its 22.4 cm in length, it can be used to measure up to 20 cm. However, the object can work as a paperweight as well.
