This exquisite egg-shape silver thimble case presents a band of foliage and an Apostle finial, and contains a size 8 Charles Horner Dorcas thimble. The sterling thimble case was made by S. Blanckensee and Son, and is hallmarked for Birmingham, 1888. Originally founded in 1826, in Bristol, the firm soon moved to Birmingham and established itself as a very successful jewellery manufacturing business. They continued trading up until 1952, when it was acquired by E. Podolsky & Co Ltd. Dorcas is a trade name, and it refers to a steel thimble overlaid with a coat of silver. It was invented by Charles Horner to great national and international acclaim.

The silver case presents S.B.&S, the Lion passant, the Birmingham assay mark, and date letter 'o' for 1888.
